Benjamin Mendy Man City return date revealed

Benjamin Mendy is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season as he recovers from his latest injury problem.

The France international missed the majority of last season with a knee injury and has not travelled with the Manchester City squad on their pre-season tour of Asia as he continues his rehabilitation in Barcelona.

MEN Sport understands Mendy is not expected back into first team training with the rest of the squad until the first couple of weeks of August which could rule him out of the campaign opener against Liverpool in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 4 and the first Premier League game against West Ham.

Mendy last featured for City in the 4-3 win over Spurs in the Champions League quarter final second leg at the Etihad and his injury plagued season meant he only made 10 starts in the league throughout the 2018/19 campaign.

With City unable to rely on the defender the club paid Angelino’s buyback clause to bring the 22-year-old back from PSV.

And the defender, who was sold to the Dutch side last season, was complimentary about his teammate despite wanting to challenge for his place.

“I haven’t spoken to Mendy,” Angelino said. “But, he’s really good and his delivery is top quality.”
