Benjamin Mendy gives Man City return update after injury

Benjamin Mendy says he is getting closer to a return to action for Manchester City.

Mendy has been out since the end of last season when he underwent knee surgery to repair a troublesome injury, and spent the summer doing rehabilitation in Barcelona.

The Frenchman posted daily updates from the gym this summer to show his progress, and he has since returned to the City Football Academy to build up his return to full training.

MEN Sport understands Mendy is expected to miss the first couple of fixtures in the Premier League, and Mendy himself has now offered an update on when he will be back in action.

Mendy had tweeted his support for his teammates after they lifted the Community Shield, when a fan replied "We seriously need you in this season bro."

Mendy had a simple response - "Count on me. Soon."

The reply indicates Mendy's recovery is proceeding as expected, with Pep Guardiola set to call upon his star left-back before long.

But when he returns he will face a different competition to the defence he previously competed with. Vincent Kompany and Fabian Delph are gone, while Oleks Zinchenko has established himself as the first choice option at left-back.

Angelino has returned after a season at PSV Eindhoven to increase competition on the left.
