Benidorm grandads 'forced to share a bed' on holiday to 'seek legal action'

Three Scouse grandads plan to seek legal action after reportedly being forced to share a bed on a dream holiday to Benidorm.

Frank Christian, John Hough, both 71, and Bernard Fitzgibbon, 69, paid over £1,100 each to Hayes Travel for the lads' holiday over Christmas and New Year.

The mates, from Croxteth, who have been friends since they were children, booked to stay at the luxurious Flash hotel and say they were promised three single beds.

But when they arrived at the hotel, staff knew nothing about it and could only offer them a double room with two single beds.

This meant the pensioners had to sleep lengthways for the majority of their trip in order to fit in the beds.

After complaining to the travel agent over the uncomfortable stay, the group were offered a £1,000 refund between them and a further £300 in holiday vouchers.

But Frank said this wasn't good enough and claims he and his mates plan to seek out legal action against Hays Travel.

They said Hays Travel has now offered a further compensation offer to the guests.

A spokesperson for Flash Hotel said the issue was entirely the fault of Hays Travel.

It said Spanish law allows for another bed to be added in twin rooms but this was not requested by the travel agency.

It added that staff did all they could to help the guests at the time.

Shortly after the holiday, widower Frank told the ECHO: "We stayed there because we thought it was a bit more upmarket, so we paid extra to have a good holiday.

"When we got there, there were only two beds in the room.

“I even offered to get another room for just one of us and we will pay the extra money but they said they had no more left.

"We went out and bought a blow up lilo to sleep on but it wasn't satisfactory.

“So, two of us slept across the width of the bed and one down the side of the bed."

The circumstances they suffered through means that Frank, John and Bernard have refused to accept the offer from Hays Travel and pursue action through a small claims court.

Frank said: "We want either a full refund or another holiday of the same value.

"The offer they have made us just isn't enough to put right everything we had to deal with.

"We spent so much time just trying to sort the issue we didn't even get to fully enjoy the holiday.

"We are going to see if there is anyway we can go through the small claims court and get back what we paid for the holiday."

Despite the issues, Frank said that the group would return for another holiday in Benidorm.

He said: "We have all been out there before and would definitely go again but it was hard to enjoy ourselves through all the complaints and dealing with the issues."

Hays Travel said in a statement: “We are sorry to hear of the customer’s continued dissatisfaction.

"The matter has been raised to director level and an enquiry with Jet2 carried out.

"Having considered all factors, we believe that the revised gesture is fair, however, we have added an additional £300 worth of holiday vouchers as a gesture of goodwill.”
