Beni Baningime's Hearts transfer promise as Joe Savage explains quieter window

Hearts transfer chief Joe Savage has revealed Beni Baningime has already promised him he'll make the club fortunes in the future.

The midfielder has been impressive since making the move to Hearts from Everton in July and Savage has explained how a vow made during negotiations is part of what attracted him.

Savage is looking for hungry young players that can help take Hearts to the next level and that's exactly what Baningime is capable of.

He was singled out by the Hearts recruitment expert as he discussed the summer's transfer business, with Cammy Devlin also earning praise.

Robbie Neilson's men didn't make too many signings this summer but Savage insists that's because quality was more important than quantity this time around.

He said: "That’s the type we want, young hungry players who wanted to go again. Certainly in Beni’s case I had known about him for years because I had worked down in England and when we heard something could be done we were desperate to do it.

I’ll tell you a wee story, when I was speaking to Beni when he signed he said: 'Joe you don’t need to worry'. I said: 'What do you mean?' And he said: 'I’ve got a point to prove, I’ll make this club money'” That’s exactly what you want to hear.

"Cammy, who we’ve brought in from Australia, he’s really, really enthusiastic and keen to do well. That’s the type we wanted and targeted. We made sure it was quality over quantity and that’s the message we wanted to send out and we’ve strengthened the squad as we could.

Former Rangers and Swansea winger Barrie McKay is among the options for Hearts to sign as a free agent now that the window is closed.

He's expected to join the club and add another attacking option for Neilson, with Savage revealing the club missed out on two players late in the window.

He added: "We’re pleased with the transfer window and we’re still trying to bring in another attacker. We were close with two from the Premier League in England, one decided to stay and the other went to another club.

"The biggest thing for us is that we had to move a lot of the players out and had to streamline the squad. We managed to do that and bring in the players we wanted to. I’m pleased, I’m not saying I’m absolutely delighted because in a month’s time they might not be doing that well and I’ll be getting absolutely slaughtered!"
