Bengaluru: Teenager comes under wheel of school bus, dies on the spot

BENGALURU: A 15-year-old girl died and two others sustained minor injuries after the bike on which they were riding was allegedly hit by a school bus near Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle flyover (Deve Gowda petrol bunk) in Banashankari limits on Thursday. The deceased is Keerthana, a resident of Nayandahalli. She had just cleared the SSLC examination.

Keerthana, her elder sister Harshitha, 18, and their friend Darshan, 21, met with the accident. Banashankari traffic police told TOI the incident occurred around 9.20am. While Darshan was riding the bike, Harshitha and Keerthana were on pillion. The trio was heading towards Kamakhya from Chennamma Circle.

A bus belonging to Delhi Public School (DPS) South reportedly hit the bike from behind. The trio fell on the road and Keerthana came under the rear wheel of the bus and died. Locals rushed both Darshan and Harshitha to a nearby hospital, where they were treated as outpatients.

“The sisters had been to their relatives’ house in Harohalli on Kanakapura Road on Wednesday along with their parents. While the parents returned home early in the morning, the sisters came to Banashankari at around 9am. They had reportedly asked Darshan to drop them home in Nayandahalli. However, they met with the accident before reaching their destination,” said a police officer.

The bus driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot. Police have registered a case against him and efforts are on to nab him. Cops said students on board the school bus weren’t hurt in the incident. “The school arranged for another vehicle and the students were picked up from the spot,” an officer said.

Anitha Bijesh, principal, DPS South, said: “It was an extremely unfortunate incident. We’re also awaiting more details. We are aware that three people were riding on a two-wheeler and were not wearing helmets. We’re cooperating with the police probe.”
