Bengaluru: TBM Urja completes 27m tunnelling work in 1 day

BENGALURU: Tunnel boring machine Urja completed 27 meters of tunnelling work in a single day on April 25, which is the best till date, BMRCL said.

Deployed by L&T, Urja is doing tunnelling work between Cantonment and Pottery Town Metro stations.

Normally, TBMs drill an average of 3m-6m a day and in some cases 15m, depending on geological conditions. “Unlike Phase 1 tunnelling, there have been no major hurdles for Phase 2 so far. But generally, such work is always complicated,” said a BMRCL official.

Officials said Urja crossed the railway line between Cantonment and Pottery Town stations, which is another significant achievement.

"Tunneling work under the Indian railways track began on April 12 and completed on April 22" said an official.

The city’s longest underground tunnel (21km Pink Line) connecting Nagawara and Kalena Agrahara (18 stations) is likely to be ready by 2024.
