Bengaluru: Pvt plane veers off runway to avoid hitting dog, topples

BENGALURU: A city-based pilot and an international skydiver from America escaped with minor injuries when their two-seater private Cessna 185 aircraft veered off the runway before toppling at Jakkur aerodrome, near Yelahanka, on Sunday evening.

The accident took place around 5pm when the pilot came across a dog on the runway and veered sideways while landing the private aircraft, sources said.

“The pilot was on a routine practice and the American skydiver was accompanying him. The aircraft, which had covered three-fourths of the runway, had almost come to a halt when the accident took place. Both were immediately shifted to a nearby private hospital where they were treated for minor injuries,” a source said. “The jurisdictional police from Sampigehalli were informed about the incident but no complaint was lodged.”

Later, the pilot said in a statement: “Everything was fine until we landed and spotted the dog on the runway. Fortunately, the aircraft was coming to a halt and moving at normal speed.”

Meanwhile, sources said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
