In Bengaluru, India, residents like Bhavani Mani Muthuvel are grappling with a severe water crisis. Muthuvel and her family have limited water supply, relying on just five 20-liter buckets per week for all their needs due to escalating costs and dwindling resources.

The city, experiencing an unusually hot February and March, coupled with reduced rainfall in recent years, is facing critically low water levels. This has led to exorbitant prices for water, particularly affecting poorer communities.

Authorities are implementing emergency measures to address the situation, such as nationalizing water tankers and capping water costs. However, concerns persist for the upcoming months when water scarcity is expected to worsen.

Experts attribute the crisis to the city's rapid growth outpacing its water infrastructure. Groundwater, a primary source for over a third of Bengaluru's 13 million residents, is depleting rapidly, with thousands of borewells running dry despite being drilled to great depths.

Factors like El Nino and insufficient rainfall have hindered groundwater recharge efforts. Additionally, delayed completion of a new piped water supply from the Cauvery River has exacerbated the situation.

The city's extensive paved surfaces and diminishing green cover have further impeded rainwater absorption and storage, akin to the water crisis faced by Cape Town in 2018.

Experts emphasize the need for sustainable solutions like lake rejuvenation, rainwater harvesting, and increased greenery to mitigate the water crisis. They also advocate for smart water usage, such as treating and reusing wastewater to reduce reliance on fresh water sources.

Residents are resorting to water rationing and other conservation measures to cope with the scarcity. Some housing societies have implemented water supply restrictions and are exploring water meter installations to manage consumption.

The looming water crisis not only impacts daily life but also poses a threat to the city's future sustainability. Urgent action is required to address Bengaluru's water woes and ensure a reliable water supply for its residents.
