Bengaluru: Cop suspended for asking ryot to bring thief to police station

BENGALURU: A head constable attached to Vijayapura police station in Bengaluru Rural district has been suspended for apathy and negligence. He had directed a few farmers who caught a thief last week to bring him to the police station instead of rushing to the spot and arresting him.

In the early hours of June 23, farmers from Yambrahalli near Devanahalli caught a 55-year-old habitual offender while he was stealing cables and other materials used for fencing agricultural lands.

Subsequently, they called Vijayapura police station and head constable Nizamuddin, who was on the night shift, answered the call. To their shock, he directed them to bring the suspect to the police station on their own. "We have no jeeps or any other vehicles," he told them.

Eventually, the farmers took the suspect to the station on a bike.

As the policeman's conduct was widely reported, a departmental inquiry was conducted and his apathy and negligence was proved, a senior police officer said. "That day, there were vehicles in the police station. Nizamuddin shouldn't have asked the farmers to bring the suspect on their own."
