BENGALURU: The rate of complications in surgery has dropped from 4.5 percent to 0.6 percent following ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) certification, Manipal Hospitals said on Monday.
Dr Somashekhar SP, chairman & HoD, surgical oncology, Manipal Hospitals, said the quality of ERAS translates into best patient care across India. “Along with clinical benefits, the days taken to recover are shortened. Thus, patients can reduce their hospital stay and see decreased postoperative pain. After implementation of ERAS, the rate of complications dropped from 4.5% to 0.6%. The length of stay for a patient in colorectal surgery reduced from 8 days to 4.5.”
The hospital claimed it is the first healthcare provider in southeast Asia to receive ERAS certification. “These parameters provide for patient/family preoperative counselling, optimisation of nutrition and fluid intakes, minimal fasting with a carbohydrate beverage before anaesthesia, and other regimens. Post-surgery, the patient can return to a normal diet,” Dr Somashekar said, adding the pilot programme was conducted for 507 patients.
