BENGALURU: Five dacoits, who had in the wee hours of February 11 barged into a gold shop in City Market, threatened the sleeping workers with lethal weapons and fled with 80 grams of gold and one kg of silver articles, were arrested on Wednesday.
Police sources claimed swift action is not unusual in dacoity cases. During the past two years, city cops have cracked 97% of the dacoity cases reported. In 2020, 29 of the 30 dacoity cases reported were solved, and in 2021, 34 of 35 cases were cracked.
They pointed out that in the February 11 case, footage from CCTV cameras helped in identifying a couple of the suspects, while police records of habitual offenders and their activities helped zero in on the others. The stolen booty too was recovered.
According to police, most dacoities are carried out by professional habitual offenders and that is why cracking the cases is easy. Any robbery committed by five or more people is termed dacoity. DCP (west) Sanjeev Patil said dacoity cases are pursued more seriously and hence the quick results.
“Most of the times, dacoits will be armed with lethal weapons and encouraged by the success of their fresh act, chances are high that they may target more victims. We follow the cases almost on an hourly basis and that’s why there is a high success rate. Still, some cases remain unsolved for short periods as the gang members would have gone to different places, carrying their share of booty. Here also, we crack the case when one of the members gets caught,” he said.
