Bengaluru: 19 years after accident, truck driver jailed

BENGALURU: Following directions from the high court, which recently upheld a fast-track court order awarding six months of simple imprisonment to a truck driver for causing a fatal accident, traffic police arrested Narayana Swamy and sent him to Bengaluru Central Prison.

The 48-year-old convict is a resident of Anjanapura, near Avalahalli. On March 24, 2003, he was arrested for mowing down a pedestrian in his 60s, Rangaiah Naidu, near Seeta Circle, Banashankari III Stage. On June 16, 2005, a metropolitan magistrate traffic court held Swamy guilty, sentenced him and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000.

Swamy appealed against the judgment at a fast-track court, which upheld the punishment on July 13, 2012. Swamy then moved the high court.
