Lost in the chaos of an ever-changing NFL landscape as the league tries to get ready for training camps is the loss of the 2020 supplemental draft.
That’s an item that doesn’t hurt the Cincinnati Bengals too much.
The league informed teams recently there won’t be a supplemental draft this year. That news struck down the idea some teams might like the event more than usual because of the possibility big-name college players could elect to enter it instead of waiting on the unknown that is this college football season.
Either way, the Bengals probably weren’t going to be active there.
The Bengals were already one of the league’s biggest spenders in free agency and had a solid draft. The front office still has to figure out big-ticket items like extensions for names like A.J. Green, Joe Mixon, Carl Lawson and even William Jackson.
While there might’ve been some prime talent in the supplemental draft, the Bengals now approach a wait-and-see scenario to see how the assembled roster works together — Zac Taylor, after all, was finally allowed to blow up the roster.
These things take time and the supplemental draft probably would’ve arrived too early and asked the Bengals to sacrifice key future draft assets. For now, steady is the course to see how the dramatic overhaul works out on the field.
