The Cincinnati Bengals still sit in the top five when it comes to teams with the most cap space remaining ahead of training camp.
As ESPN’s Field Yates pointed out on social media, the Bengals clock in at roughly $24 million, which is fifth only behind teams like Philadelphia and Detroit.
But that creates a question, not an answer: Will they spend some of that space?
The answer is quite a bit complicated. That $24 million is without any of the seven draft picks accounted for yet — and Joe Burrow happens to be the most expensive player in the draft.
That number also doesn’t account for potential extensions for guys like A.J. Green and Joe Mixon. While extensions aren’t likely to impact the current year’s cap too much, the front office would probably like to keep some comfortable wiggle room intact.
Which isn’t to say the Bengals — one of free agency’s biggest spenders this year — won’t make another move like bringing on say, Larry Warford, to help the offensive line.
But realistically, still sitting top five in cap space is a fleeting thing. It’s an easier pill to swallow that a top-five number will only be used on their own players though after the biggest spending outburst in recent memory.
