Bengals sending Renell Wren to NFI is latest hit for defensive line

The Cincinnati Bengals lost Ryan Glasgow on the defensive interior after he failed a physical, then lost Josh Tupou in the same area when he chose to opt-out of the season.

Not to worry though — the Bengals always had Renell Wren to fall back on, right?

Or not. Monday, the team shifted Wren to the NFI list, according to The Athletic’s Jay Morrison.

Wren, here or otherwise, is the most-cited player when talking about the prior losses to the defensive line before training camp even starts. He’s a fourth-round pick from last year with immense upside to rush the passer well besides the usual gap-clogging run responsibilities.

While Wren remains a part of the active roster and can get activated whenever possible, it’s yet another setback for the unit before real football activities even start.

Presumably, the Bengals will be on the hunt for help via free agency soon enough. And if they’re lucky, the poor streak here isn’t an early sign of yet another training camp filled with injury struggles before a season.
