Bengals see ‘workhorse’ potential in new leader Vonn Bell

While D.J. Reader might soak up most of the headlines as the biggest free-agent add for the Cincinnati Bengals, safety Vonn Bell might be able to make his case on the field.

Or sooner.

Bell, owner of the biggest reporting bonus in the NFL and already taking a leadership role in the battle against COVID-19, was a big talking point for defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo on Wednesday.

Per Marisa Contipelli of the team’s official website:

“Defensive Coordinator Lou Anarumo said Vonn Bell has been a workhorse during meetings, is a great communicator, great leader, and a physical guy. ‘I’m just excited to get him in and see him move in live situations. He brings a lot of energy and juice to the group.'”

Not that Reader is far behind in earning praise: Teammates have already made sure to point out how impressive he’s been too.

But Bell might just be more interesting. He’s made it clear he intends to lead vocally right upon arrival and his talents as a versatile threat on the field aren’t unknown.

While Bell was a luxury signing, he’s the best sort of luxury signing, an idea from earlier this offseason that is clearly already coming to fruition given Anarumo’s comments.
