Sometimes a team just has to take the good with the bad at training camp and that certainly applies to the Cincinnati Bengals right now.
Friday, the defense put on another dominant performance, hinting at big improvements compared to recent years — but it came at the expense of the Joe Burrow-led offense.
How bad were things for the offense? Burrow took two “sacks,” the first-team offensive line had four false starts, including one by rookie Jackson Carman, who got yanked from the lineup, there was a bad snap and Burrow ultimately went 4-of-11 in the 11-on-11 period.
On the other side of the ball, Logan Wilson — now a leader with the communications helmet in his second season — was on fire, even turning heads in coverage during a one-on-one drill with running back Chris Evans.
He and the defense have been prioritizing turnovers, as he told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com.
“We’ve been getting the ball out. It’s all about the ball, any way we can affect the ball,” Wilson said. “An interception, PBUs, fumbles all that stuff.”
It’s hardly time to panic about the Bengals offense as the offensive line gets over some quick injuries and lineup shuffles and the quarterback on a surgically repaired knee (ahead of schedule, no less) gets comfortable again.
But it is safe to get excited about an improved defense thanks to names like Wilson, who have made a blatant jump in performance.
