Bengals guard Clint Boling announces retirement

Cincinnati Bengals guard Clint Boling has retired at the age of 30 after eight seasons in the NFL.

Boling has spent the offseason dealing with a blood clot and decided to prioritize family over football, announcing his decision via the team’s official website:

“There were talks about the risks associated with playing again. When it came down to do it, ultimately I couldn’t wrap my head around it with the family and two kids,” he said in the statement. “There’s no doubt in my mind if I’m 22, 23 years old with no wife, no kids and it’s just me playing football, I’m making a different decision. But at this point in my life I have more important things to take care of than myself.”

Boling started 109 games for the Bengals after coming off the board in the fourth round of the 2011 draft. Entering 2019, he was the team’s most experienced offensive lineman and slated to start at left guard.

Per the report, Boling traveled to Paul Brown Stadium on Monday to tell Mike Brown about his decision. He was entering a contract year.
