Every little bit counts.
That’s a saying that’s incredibly true for the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason when it comes to free cap space.
And it seems like the Bengals just got a little bit of help from the NFL.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the league informed teams that the salary cap floor will be $180 million in 2021. That’s up from the projected $175 million — and it could end up being even higher.
That doesn’t sound like much. But for a team potentially trying to keep both free agents William Jackson and Carl Lawson, as well as possibly work out extensions with names like Jessie Bates, it could end up being the difference.
And that’s just looking at the club’s own players. If the Bengals want to go after big-name free agents for the second offseason in a row, it’s going to need as much free space as possible.
One example is Joe Thuney, who keeps getting projected to sign with the Bengals.
This little extra wiggle room, plus cut candidates like Geno Atkins, could mean a huge cap number that allows the Bengals to retain their own and make a free-agency splash.
