Bengals’ DT Geno Atkins enters 2019 as one of NFL’s most underrated

Cincinnati Bengals’ and former Georgia Bulldgos defensive lineman Geno Atkins is one of the more low key superstars in the NFL right now. Atkins gets very little press, but consistently puts together elite seasons for an under-the-radar Bengals team. Atkins is a seven time Pro Bowler, yet is never mentioned among the best defenders in the NFL. J.J. Watt, Fletcher Cox and Aaron Donald steal the headlines among the defensive interior. Despite the lack of media recognition, Atkins has been getting the job done:

Atkins converts his pressures into sacks: he has recorded over nine sacks in each of the past four seasons. Nine sacks is impressive and rare production from the defensive tackle position. While Aaron Donald is arguably the best player in the NFL, it is impossible not to notice the similarities between Donald and Atkins.

Atkins and Donald both share smaller body frames with elite quickness. They use their technique to get in a disruptive position. Both players are excellent at fighting with their hands. They excel at pass rushing, while being roadblocks in the run game.

Atkins and a bunch of former Bulldogs will hope to lead the Bengals to their first playoff victory in nearly a decade. He should be in for another trip to the Pro Bowl this season.
