In a not-so-unusual development right now, the Cincinnati Bengals haven’t signed some key free agents or any members of their draft class — including No. 1 pick Joe Burrow.
But the organization doesn’t anticipate any issues on the Burrow front, as recently noted by Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:
“The Bengals haven’t expected snags signing Burrow, a process that figures to mirror the arrival of him in the facility. They seem prepared to follow the contracts signed by Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, quarterbacks and the last two overall No. 1 picks.”
The Bengals, like many franchises, have hit snags in simply getting contracts done. When it comes to free agents like Trae Waynes, for example, teams don’t want outside doctors to handle physicals. The majority of teams haven’t made progress with draft picks either.
Thanks to the rookie wage scale, the only thing really hanging up a deal with Burrow is his simply getting to Paul Brown Stadium. Right now, his current report date is alongside other rookies on the tentative schedule.
Barring something unexpected, the framework from past No. 1 QBs on the rookie wage scale guarantees a smooth process, provided Burrow can actually get to town and sign on the dotted line.
