The Cincinnati Bengals enter the 2020 NFL draft clutching the most valuable asset of the second round — the first pick.
Given the break before Round 2 starts, the top of the second round is a great spot to sit. The Bengals will have their choice of best player available or otherwise sell the spot to the highest bidder.
But with best player available in mind, don’t forget wide receiver, as offensive coordinator Brian Callahan said in a recent interview.
“That’s the great thing with the 33rd pick,” Callahan said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “You can sit back and take the best player, no matter what he is. They’re saying that six could go in the first round. I think 12 to 15 can go in the first 50 picks. A lot of times you hear them say it’s a deep receiver draft, but this one does have a lot of good ones.”
That 12-15 number is indeed addressing the wideout spot, as this draft looks to boast the deepest class for the position in quite some time.
The 33rd pick could mean plucking a falling Denzel Mims out of the air, for example, or leaning into any number of second-round talents. With A.J. Green assuredly coming back but unreliable from a health standpoint, as well as John Ross’ availability always a question mark, a high-profile rookie would make sense.
Defense seems to be where the Bengals want to hit with most draft picks. But knowing how the front office operates, don’t discount the idea of a wideout for Joe Burrow’s arsenal.
