Bengals coaches from Marvin Lewis era like Zac Taylor’s teaching approach

Cincinnati Bengals fans have heard plenty from players this offseason about how Zac Taylor’s teaching style has helped bring everyone up to speed faster than usual.

But what about the coaches?

The franchise carried over seven coaches from Marvin Lewis’ staff last year, including quarterback coach Alex Van Pelt. He told Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic he likes what he sees:

“I like the way Zac has really slowed down the teaching process. If there is a mistake made, it’s not the end of the world. It’s “Let’s coach through it and make sure everyone is on the same page.” That’s really been the thing that has stood out to me is the way he’s really in the teaching progression.”

And Pelt would know — before his stint with the Bengals, he served as the main connection to Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. Things eventually fell apart there too, so he’s seen a whole spectrum of approaches for coaching staffs.

The usual disclaimer goes here, of course: this all has to come together on the field. Until then, it’s just talking.

But talk like this in June is good. If both players and coaches have gone out of their way to comment on how the teaching angle has changed for the better, it’s hard not to feel a little more optimism about the franchise’s direction.
