Bengals claim LB Clay Johnston on waivers from Panthers

In the wake of some injury news from the team’s Week 9 loss to the Cleveland Browns, the Cincinnati Bengals made an addition to the roster via the waiver wire on Tuesday.

The team announced the addition of linebacker Clay Johnston from the Carolina Panthers on waivers while shifting kick returner Brandon Wilson and linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither to injured reserve.

Johnston is a former seventh-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams two seasons ago out of Baylor and put in eight games of work with the Panthers.

The addition of a linebacker isn’t much of a surprise with Jordan Evans recently going to injured reserve too, leaving a big void on special teams.

By not adding someone to directly take Wilson’s snaps as a kick return, the team signals those duties will probably go to somebody already on the roster such as Trenton Irwin or Chris Evans.
