Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Tony Brown will soon have a new home.
The Cincinnati Bengals claimed Brown off of waivers on Monday and will be awarded the player after the Super Bowl. The Bengals finished 2-14 and had the highest waiver priority based on 2019 record.
The Packers released Brown, a second-year cornerback from Alabama, on Saturday. He played in 20 games over two seasons in Green Bay, including nine in 2019. He made three starts and produced 34 tackles and five pass breakups as a rookie in 2018.
Despite a strong summer, Brown never locked down a consistent role on Mike Pettine’s defense and eventually tumbled down the Packers’ depth chart at cornerback. With six healthy cornerbacks and potential needs elsewhere, the Packers cut Brown.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur said the team will soon fill the roster spot vacated by Brown’s release.
The Packers have six cornerbacks left on the roster going into the playoffs: Jaire Alexander, Kevin King, Tramon Williams, Chandon Sullivan, Josh Jackson and rookie Ka’dar Hollman.
