The latest talks between the NFL and NFLPA suggest a salary cap reduction in 2021 to counteract potential revenue losses this season.
While that number could ultimately change, the NFL would like to spread out the impact of the revenue losses over three or so years, meaning the salary cap will sit at $175 million.
According to Over The Cap’s Jason Fitzgerald, the Bengals would have roughly $55 million in free space if we take their current open cap and carry it over to this new number in 2021.
The current 2020 NFL salary cap is roughly $198 million, for context. A big reduction like this could mean the Bengals end up changing spending plans when it comes to the structure of extensions, for example.
As always, any chatter about Cincinnati’s cap space is a for now situation. They still need to get No. 1 pick Joe Burrow under contract and could work on extensions for guys like Joe Mixon this summer.
