Bengals bag a bargain with Tyler Boyd’s extension

The long-awaited news that Tyler Boyd will remain a Cincinnati Bengal beyond the 2019 season finally arrived this morning.

The 24-year old slot receiver has put pen to paper on a 4-year, $43 million extension, making him the 20th highest-paid wideout in the league in terms of annual salary. The finer details of the contract have yet to be revealed, but his $10.75m AAV looks very reasonable when examining the list of names that share a similar annual salary (h/t Over The Cap).

Coming off the back of a breakout 76/1028/7 season, Duke Tobin has done well to lock up Boyd through 2023, particularly when he looks set to be a vital component in the Zac Taylor offense. Boyd has only had one truly dominant season in the league, but at just 24 years old, it’s fair to think that the best could be yet to come.

A.J. Green’s return from injury may prevent Boyd from repeating a similarly impressive statistical season in 2019, but his role in the new, revamped offense will be crucial. The L.A. Rams, Taylor’s former team, had two receivers that eclipsed 1,200 receiving yards in 2018. Let’s see if the Green-Boyd duo (with a little help from John Ross) can conjure up something similar in 2019.
