Bengals add Trenton Irwin to fill Stanley Morgan’s practice squad spot

While Stanely Morgan finally gets his chance after being a popular undrafted free agent for the Cincinnati Bengals, the practice squad needed another body.

That is apparently Trenton Irwin, a rookie from Stanford who originally inked a deal with the Miami Dolphins but got let go at the start of September.

The team announced the move Thursday.

Irwin spent four seasons at Stanford, catching 152 passes for 1,738 yards and five scores.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein detailed Irwin before the draft: “Wideout with good size and soft hands who will have issues releasing into routes against press and finding separation from physical cornerbacks. While Irwin saw a bulk of his catches short, he does a better job of getting open when he gets to stutter his steps rather than slow them into full breaks. He’s a willing blocker and offers toughness over the middle so his best shot might be as a big slot with some special teams value.”

Irwin probably has a long way to go before he’s cracking onto a roster. Yet he has reliable hands and some clear-cut potential on special teams in the pros.

Given the health track record of Bengals wideouts lately, it’s a move that makes sense with some upside.
