Bengali actress Sreela Majumdar succumbs to cancer at 65

Famous Bengali actress Sreela Majumdar, who was recognized for her parts in mainstream and "parallel" film, lost her fight with cancer on Saturday afternoon, aged 65. Her spouse, journalist and columnist S.N.M. Abdi, and their son, Sohail Abdi, survive the actress.

Majumdar's husband informed IANS that she had been hospitalized earlier this month due to cancer, which she had been battling for the previous three years. Still, on Saturday she was sent home, where she breathed her last.

Following Majumdar's passing, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, writing: "I'm saddened to learn of film actress Sreela Majumdar's passing this afternoon. Sreela was a well-known and formidable actress who portrayed memorable characters in a number of important Indian motion pictures.

Director Kaushik Gangopadhyay recalled how the actress used to be consistent and never miss a shoot, even while receiving a cancer diagnosis, in an interview with Anandabazar Patrika.

Her death was likewise mourned by several coworkers. Actress Rituparna Sengupta remembered Majumdar's underutilization in an interview with PTI, citing her immense skill.

Sreela Majumdar is known for her stellar performances in many films. Sen's 'Parashuram' marked her acting debut in 1980 when she was just 16 years old. She eventually got placed in a number of independent Indian films alongside well-known actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, and the late Smita Patil.

Majumdar's performance in films were praised by critics. Majumdar, a renowned collaborator of renowned filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, and Shyam Benegal, contributed to numerous masterpieces, including Sen's "Ekdin Pratidin" (1980), "Kharji" (1982), "Akaler Sandhane" (1981), and others. She also acted in the 1983 film "Mandi" by Shyam Benegal. Over the course of her more than forty-year career, she appeared in over forty-three films.

"Palan" was her last movie. This film, which Gangopadhyay directed, was a follow-up to "Ekdin Pratidin."
