Bengali actor Aindrila Sharma passes away at 24; had suffered multiple cardiac arrests

In tragic news, Bengali actor Aindrila Sharma breathed her last on Sunday at a hospital in Kolkata. She was undergoing treatment after suffering multiple cardiac arrests earlier this week.

The 24-year-old had been admitted to the hospital on November 1 after suffering from a brain stroke. Reportedly, she had an intracranial hemorrhage and underwent a left frontotemporoparietal de-compressive craniotomy surgery.

On November 14, she experienced multiple cardiac arrests, due to which her health worsened. According to reports, the hospital sources said that the actress suffered multiple cardiac arrests earlier last night and was given Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The actress was kept on ventilator support at a private hospital in Howrah. However, she passed away earlier today, November 20.

Aindrila was a cancer survivor, who had battled the disease twice. It was only recently that she became cancer-free. She had also resumed her acting career too.

She had started her journey with TV show ‘Jhumur’, was seen in a number of popular daily soaps including ‘Jiyon Kathi’, ‘Jibon Jyoti’ and others. She also did a web series ‘Bhagar’ with her partner, Sabyasachi Chowdhury. She was also part of movies like Ami Didi No 1 and Love Cafe.

Understanding cardiac arrest: What is it?

Cardiac arrest is a sudden and an abrupt loss of heart function. It usually occurs when there is a problem in the heart's electrical system, making it difficult for the organ to pump sufficient blood to the brain, lungs and other organs.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), it only takes seconds for a person to lose consciousness and have no pulse.

What are the symptoms?

Signs of sudden cardiac arrest are immediate and can be life-threating. These include:

Sudden collapse

Other signs include chest pain and discomfort, weakness, shortness of breath and heart palpitations.

How to respond?

If a person suffers from a sudden cardiac arrest, which means he or she cannot breathe normally, has chest discomfort, or falls unconscious, here's what to do:

- Call emergency medical help

- Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

The American Heart Association uses the letters C-A-B to help people remember the order to perform the steps of CPR.

C: compressions

The first step is to administer compressions, which helps to restore blood flow. Next, one must open the airway, using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver. Third step is to do rescue breathing. It can be mouth-to-mouth breathing or mouth-to-nose breathing if the mouth is seriously injured or can't be opened.
