KOLKATA: Turning down leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari's petition seeking Mukul Roy's disqualification, Bengal assembly speaker Biman Banerjee on Wednesday ruled that the latter continued to be a BJP MLA.
Banerjee said he heard the opposing parties and discussed the evidence, including digital, presented by both sides. The speaker opined in a 53-page order that Roy had not quit BJP. Adhikari said he would move court against the order.
The leader of opposition had claimed Roy switched over to TMC after winning from Krishnagar North as a BJP candidate in June 2021 and should be removed on charges of defection.
The speaker in an earlier decision had refused to dismiss Roy from the post of MLA, prompting BJP to move the high court. Following the HC's directions for a review of his verdict, Banerjee once again said Roy was a BJP MLA.
