Bengal records 10th organ donation this year

KOLKATA: On Saturday night, the state-run IPGMER (SSKM) conducted three transplant surgeries after the family of a deceased tribal man consented to the donation.

Naba Kisku (46) from a village in West Burdwan had sustained severe head injury on September 16 and was rushed to IPGMER’s trauma care centre where he was declared brain dead on Saturday.

Kisku’s heart was transplanted into a 46-year-old man from Howrah and his two kidneys into a 25-year-old man and 31-year-old woman from Kolkata, respectively. The donor’s skin and cornea, too, were banked. All the recipients were getting treated at IPGMER and their names were registered for transplant.

This was the 10th deceased organ donation in Bengal this year. The city recorded five donations in July. But in August, the state did not see much movement on organ donation front.
