Benfica vs Bayern Munich live: Benfica top Club World Cup Group C standings thanks to Schjelderup’s first-half goal

Benfica enjoyed a first-ever win over Bayern Munich in a decisive Group C clash at the Club World Cup, with the Portuguese side topping the group as a result.

21-year-old Andreas Schjelderup’s 13th-minute goal made the difference as keeper Anatolii Trubin made a series of inspired saves to keep out the German giants.

Bayern had already guaranteed a spot in the next stage of the competition and manager Vincent Kompany made seven changes from their 2-1 win over Boca Juniors last time out, but he brought on the big guns in Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich and Michael Olise in the second half to try to wrestle back control.

But Benfica defended doggedly to seal all three points and leapfrog Bayern in the table. They will play the winners of Chelsea or ES Tunis in the next stage, while Bayern face Flamengo.

'We will still take momentum into the next game' - Vincent Kompany

22:30 , Flo Clifford

Vincent Kompany tells DAZN, “I think our first half wasn't good at all. With the pitch and the heat, I just feared this wouldn't go as fluid as normal but I was still confident for the second half. We created so much and played really well. It’s football. If you have chances and don't take them, you pay the price.”

Asked whether it was the plan to bring on heavyweights Kimmich, Kane and Olise at half-time, or if they were introduced sooner than he would like, he says, “It was the plan. I’d rather finish strong because I knew it would start slow. I was definitely confident this is what we needed to do. I can't take anything from this game.

Bayern face Flamengo next, and he says, “It was either Flamengo or Chelsea. It’s going to be a tough game. We know we can create the chances.

“Anyway, we were dominant, we created more chances, we didn't win. We can't afford for this to happen but we still take momentum into the next game.”

FULL-TIME: Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

22:04 , Flo Clifford

Ah, Kane’s miss wouldn’t have stood anyway as he shoved Otamendi in the build-up.

Time for the celebrations to begin for Benfica!

FULL-TIME: Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

22:03 , Flo Clifford

90+8 mins: Kane’s miss is practically the last action of the game!

Benfica cling on for a brilliant first win over what was, by the second half, a full-strength Bayern team.

Schjelderup’s first-half goal is the difference and Benfica top Group C!

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

22:02 , Flo Clifford

90+8 mins: Bayern keep coming. Bajrami makes an excellent tackle to deny Stanisic at the back line.

Olise swings in a corner but Kane knocks it wide from mere yards out! Dreadful!

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

22:00 , Flo Clifford

90+6 mins: Laimer sprints to the back line to keep the ball in play and cut it back, Trubin gets to it, spills but falls gratefully onto it again. Offside anyway.

Trubin gets warned by the referee to get a move on.

Two minutes for Benfica to cling on...

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:58 , Flo Clifford

90+4 mins: Bayern curl in another effort, but this one’s quite tame. Trubin hops up to collect and goes to ground to waste some time.

Muller is at the back post to greet a cross in from Olise but Aursnes gets there first and puts it behind for a corner!

Aursnes wins the battle for the delivery.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:54 , Flo Clifford

90 mins: Gouveia has been on for about five seconds and he’s already been shown a yellow for a pull-back on Stanisic. He’s doing his assigned job well.

Bayern win a corner... Otamendi gets a thumping header to it.

EIGHT minutes added on in Charlotte.

SAVE! Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:52 , Flo Clifford

88 mins: Di Maria, who has been hopping around with amazing energy, is replaced by Joao Rego. Pavlidis comes off too, for Tiago Gouveia.

Now Kane threads a brilliant ball forward to Sane, he’s one on one with Trubin - but the keeper denies him again!!

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:50 , Flo Clifford

86 mins: Bayern keep pushing for an equaliser. Laimer’s long looping cross seems destined for Kane’s head and into the goal - but with the Englishman inches away from it, Antonio Silva heads it away!

Laimer finds Kane again but he’s outmuscled by Otamendi along the right flank.

Now Sane blasts over the bar and makes a small child’s day as he catches the ball.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:47 , Flo Clifford

82 mins: Olise darts and dances across the edge of the penalty area, trying to find a gap, and ends up running deep into midfield without losing possession. He certainly isn’t feeling lacklustre in this heat.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:42 , Flo Clifford

78 mins: Renato Sanches goes down and needs treatment... he’s to be replaced by Bajrami, a defensive sub by Bruno Lage. Benfica have around 15 minutes to cling on.

SAVE! Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:39 , Flo Clifford

74 mins: Back underway. Bayern press again, Kimmich, Laimer and Olise pass between themselves for a bit... and Olise floats a lovely ball in.

Bayern have about a million shirts in the box, it falls to Pavlovic, who cuts it back, takes a couple of touches... and is denied by Trubin!!

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:33

69 mins: Kokcu gets the better of two defenders as he drives down the left but his strike is deflected away from goal.

Referee-cam shows just how glorious that Kimmich shot was, on the spin and just threading a line between a host of defenders... but ref Francois Letexier looked immediately to the linesman and saw the flag raised. Quite funny seeing a close-up of Kane remonstrating with him afterwards.

Bayern are in the ascendancy as we head for another cooling break.

CLOSE! Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:30 , Flo Clifford

66 mins: Over in Nashville Auckland City have just equalised against Boca Juniors (!!) - but the game has been suspended with some bad weather on the way.

Another chance for Bayern as Kane jumps for a header... Muller and Kane end up on the deck and immediately look hopefully to the ref... he says no, lads, don’t push your luck.

Now Laimer runs onto Muller’s pass from the centre of the box - but the defender’s strike, from the right of the area, clatters against the far post and out!! He was a fraction offside anyway.

DISALLOWED GOAL! Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:27 , Flo Clifford

62 mins: Boos ring out as the flag goes up very, very late before Bayern can properly celebrate a cool-as-you-like goal by Kimmich.

Kane was obstructing the view of the keeper, standing right in front of him. Bayern don’t like it... but their protestations are for naught.

While they remonstrate with the ref, Boey is replaced by Laimer.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:22 , Flo Clifford

58 mins: A Kane attempt is deflected behind for a corner. It’s Olise again creating all the chances.

Upamecano is replaced by Tah.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:20 , Flo Clifford

56 mins: Akturkoglu fancies making an immediate impact and Benfica have a spell of possession... he drives forward and aims a low strike goalward but Neuer leaps down to save!

A good statement of intent from the Portuguese side.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:19 , Flo Clifford

55 mins: Changes for Benfica now. Prestianni and goalscorer Schjelderup come off for Kokcu and Akturkoglu.

CLOSE! Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:16 , Flo Clifford

52 mins: All Bayern and they should have an equaliser! It’s a great long ball forward by Kimmich, who bends it into the path of Sane, sprinting past two defenders - but Trubin stands firm and denies him!

The ball is recycled back to Muller in the box, who shanks it straight into Trubin’s gloves.

Now Bayern come again and Pavlovic blasts over the bar!

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:12 , Flo Clifford

48 mins: Otamendi goes into the book for bringing down Boey. Kimmich takes the resulting free-kick but a Benfica defender hoicks it clear ... and the offside flag goes up, belatedly.

Bayern are looking much more like themselves already. Michael Olise is making himself a nuisance and showing off some sweet footwork down the right. He crosses in... but there’s no one in space.

SECOND HALF: Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:09 , Flo Clifford

Work to do for Bayern to avoid a first defeat of this Club World Cup.

Vincent Kompany is making half-time changes with that in mind: Kane, Kimmich, and Olise are on, for Palhinha, Gnabry, and Bischof.

Here we go again!

HALF-TIME: Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:52 , Flo Clifford

Half-time comes at the right time for Benfica, who have withstood that spell of Bayern pressure.

Schjelderup’s goal is the difference at the moment.

As it stands, Benfica are top of the group, while Bayern - who are going through regardless - are second.

CLOSE! Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:51 , Flo Clifford

45+3 mins: Four minutes are added on. Schjelderup tries to tee up Prestianni (who is back on) but a Bayern shirt goes to ground and gets in the way.

Di Maria floats in a delightful ball but Otamendi can’t get to it.

End to end now! Now Sane picks out Muller with a curling cross but the German doesn’t connect with it well enough and Antonio Silva and Trubin both run onto him. Bayern should have an equaliser at least.

CLOSE! Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:47 , Flo Clifford

45 mins: Much better from Bayern: Bischof curls the ball forward to Gnabry, slicing through the defence, and Gnabry spins round his defender and takes a couple of lovely touches to keep it in play before cutting back to Sane.

But Sane blasts well over, taken by surprise.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:45 , Flo Clifford

43 mins: Guerreiro presses forward but gives the ball away cheaply to Renato Sanches. Bayern are looking a bit laboured here but are at least trying to build something.

Stanisic lays it off for Gnabry on the left; he crosses in but a Benfica shirt hooks it away.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:43 , Flo Clifford

39 mins: Another dangerous move from Benfica is worked to Di Maria on the edge of the box. He blasts one wide and high with his left foot and grimaces.

Medical staff run onto the pitch to attend to Prestianni, who looks to be suffering in the heat. Ice packs are applied. It does look grim out there.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:38 , Flo Clifford

34 mins: Back underway in Charlotte.

A better start from Bayern after that break: Gnabry dinks down the left and crosses in, but Aursnes is there to clear.

Albeit, not entirely, and Bayern come again, Benfica essentially forming a roadblock on the edge of the area. Sane takes a tumble on the edge of the box but play continues - even Bayern didn’t bother appealing for that.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:33 , Flo Clifford

30 mins: The players head off for a drinks break, sensible given the high temperatures here in North Carolina.

So far Benfica have looked the more with it. Di Maria has been a handful.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:30 , Flo Clifford

27 mins: Elsewhere, Boca Juniors have scored the opener against Auckland City, through Lautaro di Lollo.

They need both Benfica to lose and to score more against the Kiwi part-timers than the Portuguese side (six) to progress.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:25

22 mins: Di Maria runs onto a lovely ball in behind and Upamecano and Neuer get in a right flap trying to clear, the keeper rushing out some 30 yards out from goal but instead whacking it against his own teammate.

It’s sent flying out of play but that really could have gone very badly wrong. Vincent Kompany is absolutely furious on the sidelines.

Upamecano gets a good head to clear the resulting corner.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:23 , Flo Clifford

20 mins: Benfica look lively again, Pavlidis is set loose and one-on-one with the keeper - but with Upamecano hot on his heels he takes a tumble and Neuer hastily collects. It was a hopeful dive and the ref says no penalty.

Renato Sanches is the first to go into the book for a late follow-through on the back of Muller’s shin.

Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:20 , Flo Clifford

16 mins: Di Maria and Aursnes are proving a handful for the German champions. Di Maria outwits the Bayern defence again with some fancy footwork but comes unstuck as he takes one touch too many and goes tumbling in the box... but of his own volition, no penalty.

GOAL! Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

20:18 , Flo Clifford

13 mins: The Portuguese side have looked more menacing so far and it’s 21-year-old Schjelderup who breaks the deadlock!

Di Maria combines beautifully with Aursnes down the right; Aursnes crosses a delightful ball into the centre of the box and Schjelderup makes the overlapping run to slot home!

It puts the pressure on Boca Juniors in their game against Auckland City, with Benfica - as it stands - topping the group.

CLOSE! Benfica 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:14 , Flo Clifford

11 mins: Now Benfica look very dangerous! Bayern fail to clear a move and the ball is recycled to Di Maria, who takes a couple of touches and lets fly a low strike - but Neuer gets his fingertips to it and skews it round the side of the far post!

Benfica come again but this time an attempt is sent straight into the gloves of Neuer.

Benfica 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:11 , Flo Clifford

8 mins: Renato Sanches counters, Di Maria is allowed acres of space to square to Schjelderup... who sends it bobbling well wide of goal and behind for a corner.

It’s dealt with by Gnabry and Bayern look to counter immediately, but it drifts too long for Sane to control it.

Benfica 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:07 , Flo Clifford

4 mins: Fine work by Bayern as a Benfica shirt is left sprawled on the turf as Stanisic builds an attack... forward to Leroy sane, who has Muller in his sights in the box, driving down the right.

But Antonio Silva jogs back, alert to the danger, and heads it away for a corner.

Benfica's Club World Cup so far

19:40 , Flo Clifford

Benfica head to Charlotte in need of a result after a trickier start to the competition.

Boca Juniors let a two-goal lead slip away in a 2-2 draw with the Portuguese side, before Benfica put in a stronger performance against Auckland City, who they beat 6-0.

But they need to avoid defeat tonight and also hope Boca record a lesser winning margin against Auckland (or lose) in order to progress to the last 16.

Bayern Munich's Club World Cup so far

19:30 , Flo Clifford

Bayern Munich strolled to a 10-0 win over Auckland City in their Club World Cup opener.

The Bavarians hit double digits to record the biggest ever win in the Club World Cup, giving Auckland’s team of part-timers a stark reality check to the powers of Europe’s elite.

Their encounter against Boca Juniors was considerably tougher but the German champions still prevailed 2-1 and have automatically progressed to the last 16.

Vincent Kompany could rest some of his major players for tonight’s meeting with Benfica.

Antonio Rudiger claims he was racially abused in Club World Cup clash

19:20 , Flo Clifford

Antonio Rudiger has claimed he was racially abused during Real Madrid's Club World Cup victory over Mexican side Pachuca on Sunday.

Xabi Alonso confirmed a complaint had been made after an incident towards the end of the Spanish giants' 3-1 victory in Charlotte.

Rudiger had clashed with Pachuca captain Gustavo Cabral in injury time but it was not clear if the alleged abuse came from a player or someone in the crowd.

"That's what Rudiger said, and we believe him," Alonso told reporters in his post-match press conference. "It is important to have zero tolerance in these kinds of situations. Fifa now is investigating. That's all I can say."

Chelsea forced to limit training to ‘very short’ sessions due to heat: ‘It’s almost impossible’

19:10 , Flo Clifford

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca said it is "almost impossible" to train as temperatures in Philadelphia reached 37 degrees ahead of Wednesday's meeting with Esperance de Tunis.

Training was restricted for the Blues the day before the match at Subaru Park which will determine whether they progress to the last 16 of the Club World Cup, with the length of the session cut short and work restricted to a shaded area of the pitch.

Maresca's team need to avoid defeat against the Tunisian side or face the embarrassing prospect of falling at the first hurdle of FIFA's revamped tournament.

And with conditions heavily impacting preparations the build-up to their final Group D fixture has been far from ideal.

Real Madrid edge closer to Club World Cup knockout rounds after impressive victory over Pachuca

18:48 , Flo Clifford

Real Madrid shrugged off an early red card for Raul Asencio to move closer to the knockout stages of the Club World Cup after a 3-1 win over Mexican side Pachuca in Charlotte.

Asencio was sent off in the seventh minute for hauling down Salomon Rondon and things looked bleak for the Spanish giants, who had been held to a frustrating draw by Al Hilal in their opening match, and were missing Kylian Mbappe due to illness.

But after soaking up a spell of pressure, Real broke the deadlock through Jude Bellingham in the 35th minute before Arda Guler doubled the lead ahead of half-time.

Federico Valverde volleyed in a third with 20 minutes left, before the Mexicans grabbed a late consolation through Elias Montiel's deflected effort.

Lionel Messi sets up PSG reunion with Inter Miami as Atletico Madrid bow out of Club World Cup

18:38 , Flo Clifford

Paris Saint-Germain beat Seattle Sounders to advance to the last 16 of the Club World Cup but Atletico Madrid bowed out despite a late 1-0 win over Botafogo.

The European champions went into their final Group B match at risk of elimination following a shock loss to the Brazilian side, but goals from Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi proved enough to top the group.

Atletico, thumped 4-0 by PSG in their opening match, needed to win by three clear goals to progress but a late winner from substitute Antoine Griezmann was not enough and it was Botafogo who reached the next stage.

Benfica vs Bayern Munich

18:07 , Flo Clifford

Benfica and Bayern Munich continue their Club World Cup campaigns as the pair meet in Charlotte.

The pair sit first and second in Group C with the German side already assured of progressing to the knockout rounds.

Benfica, meanwhile, need a point to make certain of advancing alongside their opponents - Boca Juniors could yet overhaul them if they secure a bigger win against Auckland City than the Portuguese side’s 6-0 thrashing.

That game kicks off simultaneously as the round of 16 line-up begins to take shape at the expanded club tournament.
