Benfica v Rangers fan latest as Jorge Jesus says club could welcome 20,000 supporters for match

Benfica boss Jorge Jesus believes up to 20,000 supporters could safely attend their Europa League clash with Rangers.

Steven Gerrard's men head for Portugal for the top of the table Group D clash on Thursday evening.

Benfica has just under 5000 fans in the Estadio da Luz for their previous home game, and manager Jesus feels they could have three or four times that number when Rangers come to town.

The Lisbon club will become the first team in the history of the competition to go 24 home matches unbeaten if they avoid defeat to Gerrard's men.

However Rangers will be in confident mood after overcoming Galatasaray, Standard Liege and Lech Poznan on the European stage in recent weeks.

Jesus wants the backing of a big crowd to help his team to a positive result.

He said: "The stadiums of the big three clubs in Portugal, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon and Porto all have the conditions not to endanger public health, as long as everything is well organised, with entrances and exits by different sectors.

"There is no absolutely no need to limit the game to 5,000 supporters. We could easily accommodate 15,000 or 20,000 for the match against Rangers.

"We have to know how to live with this virus that has changed our lives. But we cannot be afraid, we have to know how to live with it in all areas and ensure there is prevention."

Benfica v Rangers will kick-off at 5.55pm on Thursday.
