Benfica suffer shock defeat as Rangers Europa League rivals thumped by Boavista

Benfica suffered their first defeat of the season by being beaten 3-0 by Boavista.

The Portuguese giants had a chance to go back to the top of the league but were battered by Boavista on Monday night.

Jorge Jesus' men put out a strong team but had no answer as they struggled to deal with the home side.

Former Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes put Boavista 1-0 up from the penalty spot after 16 minutes.

Benfica had the majority of the possession but were 2-0 down before half time when ex- Celtic target Alberth Elis added a second.

The visitors had just five shots throughout the game and only one of them was on target as their big money signings struggled to make an impact.

Striker Darwin Nunez did have a goal chopped off for offside but the second half continued in the same manner as the first.

Boavista got a third when Yanis Hamache netted on 86 minutes and Benfica couldn’t find a way back into the game.

Jesus made five subs during the game with Franco Servi, Haris Sevorivic, Diogo Goncalves, Rafa Silva and Julian Weigl all being introduced but they couldn’t inspire a comeback.

Rangers travel to Lisbon on Thursday to take on Benfica in the Europa League, hoping to continue their 100 per cent record.
