Benfica star Pizzi fires Rangers notice of intent as playmaker outlines ambitious Europa League vision

Benfica playmaker Pizzi has fired a stark warning to Rangers that his side not only intends to win at Ibrox but lift the Europa League outright.

Both teams go into the game on Thursday knowing a win will ensure qualification with two games to spare.

Steven Gerrard wants to tie up his side's place in the last 32 quickly so he can focus on domestic matters but the Portuguese side won't be easy to stop.

Their last game was an entertaining 3-3 draw but it will have felt like a victory for the Lisbon giants having trailed for much of the game and being a man down after Nicolas Otamendi's sending off.

But Portuguese international Pizzi has revealed Benfica have set their heights further than just easing through the section.

He said: "I've been at this club for many years now and I have watched us evolve both in terms of the structure of the club and the quality of the squad.

"We have an excellent team and one of the most respected managers in the world.

"So although we have made some progress in Europe, for me, we should be doing a lot better - we should be challenging for European trophies. For a club the size of Benfica, we have to do better.

"We have to be more consistent and beat teams home and away. In the past, we have struggled against the so-called lesser sides in Europe.

"This season I think our aim has to be to get as far as possible in the competition.

"When you look at our squad, it's packed full of very talented players who should be playing at the highest stage in European competition.

"We want to get through the group and go on and be challengers."
