Benfica make move for Harry Wilson as Premier League clubs chase Liverpool winger

Benfica have failed in an initial attempt to sign Harry Wilson as the Liverpool winger edges nearer a permanent departure this summer.

The Portuguese side contacted the Reds with an official approach for Wilson, who is currently starring for Wales in Euro 2020.

Although no firm bid was lodged, initial talks soon broke down with the clubs too far apart in their valuation of the 24-year-old.

Liverpool are asking for around £13million for Wilson having turned down an £11m offer from Burnley last summer.

Wilson's stock has since risen after an impressive season on loan with Cardiff City in the Championship and a brace of appearances at the European Championships. Wales face Denmark in the last 16 on Saturday.

While Liverpool - who will not sanction another loan departure for Wilson - expect Benfica to return for further negotiations, there is serious interest from elsewhere in the player.

Newly-promoted Brentford are assessing a move while relegated West Bromwich Albion are also keen.

And Swansea City boss Steve Cooper, who is being linked with the Fulham job once Scott Parker's expected departure is confirmed, is a known admirer having worked with Wilson during his time as a coach at the Liverpool Academy.

Cooper failed in an attempt to take the player on loan to Swansea last season.

Wilson has made two appearances for Liverpool's first team having joined the club at under-9 level. He has had previous spells on loan at Crewe Alexandra, Hull City, Derby County and Bournemouth.
