Benfica confirm Tottenham deal for Carlos Vinicius on initial season-long loan

Benfica have confirmed that striker Carlos Vinicius has agreed a season-long loan deal with Tottenham.

football.london exclusively reported that Spurs were close to a deal to bring in a new striker on Wednesday.

And Benfica have now stated that a €3million (£2.7million) deal has been agreed to take the striker on loan for the rest of the 2020/21 season.

Spurs having the option to make the move permanent for €42million (£38.1million), taking the total cost of a potential transfer to €45million (£40.8million).

Benfica released a statement reading: "Sport Lisboa e Benfica - Futebol, SAD informed the Securities Market Commission (CMVM) that it reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for the loan of player Carlos Vinicius until the end of the 2020-21 sports season for an amount of 3 millions of euros.

"The said agreement, communicated at 11:56 pm on Thursday, includes a purchase option clause in the amount of 45 million euros, to which, if exercised, the amount paid for the loan will be deducted.

"The agreement is dependent on the signing of the striker's sports work contract with Tottenham Hotspur."

football.london revealed that the striker is set to undergo a medical on Friday, with the Brazilian already agreeing terms with Spurs on a move.

With Vinicius playing in European competition last season, there are no problems expected with a work permit, and the move could be completed before Sunday's trip to face Manchester United at Old Trafford - though not in time for him to be registered for the match.

Vinicius was Jose Mourinho's top target throughout the transfer window, but an initial price tag of €50million (£45.4million) put Spurs off a deal.

However, the Portuguese club's failure to qualify for this season's Champions League has eased things for Spurs, with Benfica's finances taking a hit.

Vinicius scored 24 goals in 47 appearances last season, adding a further 13 assists in an impressive year that alerted Spurs to his talents.

The striker can also play in a wide role, meaning his chances of time in the first team are not limited to merely acting as back up for Harry Kane.
