Benefits Street star Fungi has been found dead by police

A man featured in the Benefits Street documentary has been found dead by police.

The body of James Clarke, known as 'Fungi' in the Channel 4 documentary series, was discovered by police in the early hours of July 1.

Police officers made the discovery at around 2.45am, Birmingham Live reports.

Ambulance crews were then alerted.

On arrival, paramedics said they found Mr Clarke in cardiac arrest and there was nothing they could do to save him.

He was confirmed dead at the scene.

Devastated friends have taken to Facebook to pay tribute to the TV star.

One wrote: "Jesus Christ news I didn't wanna hear R.I.P fungi GNBF."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "Called at 2.52am by police to Vicarage Road, Kings Heath reports of a patient in cardiac arrest.

"Two ambulances were sent but after the first crew arrived, the second was quickly stood down.

"Confirmed death of a man, handed over to the police."
