Benefits Street star defends Jeremy Kyle after guest death as show suspended

Benefits Street star White Dee has defended This is why Jeremy Kyle isn't on today - ITV viewers' disappointment as Dickinson's Real Deal shown insteadfollowing a guest dying a week after appearing on the controversial show.

ITV suspended today's (Monday) programme after the tragedy was announced.

The identity of the person has not yet been confirmed and a review has been launched.

White Dee , real name Dee Kelly, appeared on the show back in February to talk about her attempted suicide.

She told our sister paper BirminghamLive today that she was "shocked and saddened" to hear about the death but said her experience of the series was positive.

She said: "I don't know the circumstances surrounding the death but I am shocked and saddened to hear a Jeremy Kyle guest has died.

"I went onto the show earlier this year and I can't criticise producers in any way.

"They talked me through absolutely everything before the show, asked me what I wanted to talk about and asked me what i didn't want to talk about.

"I was really nervous in the moments leading up to meeting Jeremy but he treated me with respect.

"I thought he would rip me apart for becoming famous for being on benefits but he treated me with respect and even said he liked me at the end of the show.

"Afterwards the Jeremy Kyle team asked me if i wanted any additional support. They were all very professional.

"EastEnders actress Daniella Westbrook was also on my show and she went in to rehab afterwards.

"I would like to think everyone who appears on the show is given the same level of aftercare that we experienced and I have no reason to doubt they wouldn't."

On the show Dee revealed how Benefits Street did not make her rich - and spoke openly about the price of fame.

The 46-year-old former James Turner Street resident appeared on Celebrity Big Brother and enjoyed other TV work and newspaper and magazine deals.

ITV said in a statement: "Everyone at ITV and The Jeremy Kyle Show is shocked and saddened at the news of the death of a participant in the show a week after the recording of the episode they featured in and our thoughts are with their family and friends.

“ITV will not screen the episode in which they featured.

“Given the seriousness of this event, ITV has also decided to suspend both filming and broadcasting of The Jeremy Kyle Show with immediate effect in order to give it time to conduct a review of this episode of the show.”

The weekday daytime programme has been on the air since 2005. And since then many have debated for years whether Kyle is to aggressive to people appearing on the show.

Presented by former BRMB radio presenter Kyle, the confrontational talk show sees guests open up about their conflicts, dilemmas and relationship issues in front of a studio audience.

In 2013 the TV presenter was diagnosed with suffering from testicular cancer and underwent chemotherapy treatment - eventually getting the all clear.

He has since campaigned for men to check themselves regularly and for more screening to take place.
