Benefits payments won't be affected by industrial action, says department

The Department for Communities has reassured those who receive benefits that they are working to "minimise any potential disruption" on Friday.

Industrial action is due to take place.

Civil servants under the NIPSA union are striking over pay.

Alison Millar, NIPSA General Secretary, said: Members across the Northern Ireland Civil Service will be on a one day strike on Friday 24 January. Members are angry that they have not had a resolution to their long running dispute on the issue of pay, terms and conditions.

"Civil Servants were further angered when there was no mention in the 'New Decade, New Deal' document of seeking to settle the civil service dispute yet specific reference was made to the Health Workers and Teachers’ Disputes.

"Further anger arose yesterday given the announcement that MLA’s who have not been at their place of work for the last 3 years were to receive a £1000 pay increase with a further increase in April 2020."

The department said that:

  • All benefits payments will be issued as normal
  • All digital benefit services are available as usual
  • Telephone lines across the department will be operational, but will be busier than usual
  • Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) customers are excused signing for Friday January 24
