Benefits cheat mum 'too frail to dress' competed as international kickboxer

A benefits cheat mum who claimed she was too frail to dress herself was caught competing as an international kickboxer.

Tammy Horton pocketed over £21,000 while claiming she spent her days living in her pyjamas because she was in too much pain to dress.

Horton, 31, also claimed she had to use a wheelchair and walking sticks to get around.

But investigators acting on a tip-off found the mum-of-one, from Stickney, Lincolnshire, had secretly joined a local kickboxing club.

Horton regularly attended sessions for nearly two years while claiming benefits.

During that time she competed in a number of tournaments including the British Open and international events.

Mum of man who can't walk or talk says DWP is making him prove he's disabled

Video footage showed her kicking opponents and showing no signs of her alleged frailties.

Lisa Hardy, prosecuting, told Lincoln Crown Court: “She said she had serious and chronic conditions.

“She said she was limited to walking with crutches or using a wheelchair and that she was on morphine to control the pain.

“An investigation subsequently showed she had joined a kickboxing club and was a regular member.

“She received grading certificates and competed in competitions.

“This was a lady who expressed that she needed an extra banister fitted just to be able to get up and down stairs.”

When quizzed by investigators Horton said her pain was “always there” but varied.

She also claimed she attended kick-boxing clubs to give herself “mental focus”.

Horton admitting failing to notify the DWP of a change in circumstance and making a false statement to obtain benefits.

Judge Andrew Easteal said she had displayed “extraordinary arrogance” by pocketing the cash.

He added: “The contrast between the picture you painted and the reality of the life you were living is breathtaking.

“All that time you were becoming an accomplished kick boxer. This was a planned, detailed, gross deception that went on for several years.”

Edna Leonard, defending, said Horton suffers from chronic pelvic disease and fibromyalgia.

But she accepted she was not entitled to the level of benefits she was receiving.
