Benefits cheat claimed £66,000 while visiting Canary Islands with secret husband

A benefits fraudster fiddled £66,000 to pay for luxury sunshine holidays with her secret husband - after pretending she was single.

Cheating Helen Williams, 52, has been ordered to pay the full amount back at a rate of £103-a-month, meaning she will be over 100 by the time her debt is settled.

Williams told officials she was living alone and falsely claimed £66,701.66 in state handouts.

But a court heard Williams she was secretly married to husband David - and spent thousands on "several holidays a year" to the Canary Islands with him.

Prosecutor Tom Scapens said the claims started out as legitimate but she married husband David Williams in 2010 and the couple moved in together.

He said: "She did not notify the authorities of her change of circumstance."

Mr Scapens said Williams claimed income support, housing benefit, and council tax benefit by saying she was single and unable to work.

But really the couple lived together, owned a joint bank account, and would go on holidays together including to the Canary Islands.

Swansea Crown Court heard that Mrs Williams initially told investigators her husband only lived at the house a couple of nights a week.

She later said she was in a "controlling relationship" from her abusive husband, but Mr Scapens said this wasn't true.

Williams, of Brynhyfryd, Swansea, admitted fraud and three counts of failing to notify a change of circumstances.

Stephen Thomas, defending, said she suffered from "significant health issues", and was a carer for her parents.

He said: "She is thoroughly ashamed of herself."

Judge Peter Heywood told her: "This was deliberate fraudulent activity. £66,000 is a significant amount of money at a time when the public purse is under pressure."

Williams was handed a nine month suspended sentence.

She was ordered to repay the money at £103-per-month.
