While the world awaits to find out what really happened in that late-night “fracas” between Jeremy Clarkson and Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon, Monkey is reminded of Benedict Cumberbatch’s appearance on the BBC2 show when he taught Clarkson … how to punch.

Strictly in the theatrical sense, you’ll understand, although the Sherlock star wasn’t overly impressed by Clarkson’s initial attempts.

“What are you doing? You look like you are trying to wipe a windscreen,” Cumberbatch told him.

“Do you punch with that side of your hand, when you punch somebody?” said the Top Gear man (about 1 min 20 secs in).

“Do you want me to try a fake punch?” asks Cumberbatch. “What if it turns into a real one?” replies Clarkson in the episode broadcast by Dave - a big fan of Top Gear, you’ll remember - earlier this week.

The UKTV channel was a beneficiary of the BBC’s decision to pull the remaining episodes of the motoring show, Sunday night’s repeat watched by 372,000 viewers, up nearly 50% on its slot average.
