Bench with 'the worst view in Wales' now has a much better one

It had been described as the bench with the worst view in Wales.

That might be harsh, particularly as it is situated in one of the most sought-after parts of Swansea.

But the wooden-slated public seating in the heart of Mumbles earned the unenviable title due to the verdant overgrowth immediately in front of it.

Its positioning, close to the mini roundabout at the junction of Mumbles and Newton roads, means it should have allowed people taking the weight off their feet a pleasant view out over Swansea Bay.

Instead, a privet and castor oil plant had been allowed to grow – and grow.

Consequently, anyone taking a moment’s rest there has been greeted by a green wall in place of a sweeping vista.

It hit the headlines over a year ago when images of it were shared on social media.

But the foliage has only now received some long-overdue attention.

Swansea council said the bench had been installed long before the area was landscaped in its current form.

And the reason for the delay is, like virtually everything else over the past seven months, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesman for the authority said: “Some parks maintenance work planned for completion earlier in the year was put on hold while staff took on alternative roles to support the councils overall efforts linked to coronavirus. Works which were postponed are now being completed.”

It now leaves a bench in Swansea's Castle Square as a strong contender for the one with the worst view in the city.

It looks towards a wall, part of the exterior of the old Castle Cinema, which is currently home to Laser Zone.
