MILWAUKEE — Former World Series MVP Ben Zobrist plans to return from personal leave and rejoin the team this season, team president Theo Epstein said Friday in Milwaukee.
Zobrist, who has been dealing with family issues related to a pending divorce since leaving the team in early May, has been working out, including baseball activities, Epstein said, and could begin playing in what amounts to minor-league rehab games by next weekend.
Major League Baseball rules covering players on the restricted list allow a 30-day minor-league assignment in his case. Rules require he be reinstated by Aug. 31 to be eligible for the postseason.
“We’re thrilled,” Epstein said.
