'Ben White won' - Arsenal fans agree on Man United's Raphael Varane after Newcastle performance

Manchester United struggled against relegation battling Newcastle United on Monday night as they were held to a 1-1 draw at St James' Park.

Raphael Varane returned to the starting line-up to play alongside Harry Maguire in central defence, but the Frenchman struggled to deal with the pace of the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and looked a shadow of his former self.

His United career has been thwarted by injury thus far, and following his poor performance against the Magpies, Arsenal fans have restarted what was a topical summer debate.

Varane arrived at Old Trafford with a huge reputation and impressive CV. At £35million, it looked to be a bargain on paper, but things just haven't gone as planned.

Meanwhile, Arsenal spent £50million on England centre-back Ben White.

The Gunners were mocked by United fans for spending such an enormous amount on a player who had just one season of Premier League experience, but for now at least, the bragging rights are very much back with the north Londoners.

Although he's made the odd mistake, White has looked largely comfortable and assured alongside centre-back partner Gabriel Magalhaes.

He's still got a while to go to justify such a huge price-tag, but at 24, he's very much part of Mikel Arteta's Arsenal plans, and could be an important player at the Emirates for years to come.

And following Varane's difficult 90 minutes at St James' Park, Arsenal fans were quick to comment on how they've ended up getting the better deal.

Take a look at some of what's been said on Twitter.

White has helped guide the Gunners into fourth place in the table whilst United currently occupy seventh position, seven points below Arteta's side, although they do have two games in hand.

Arsenal fans will be hoping White's good form continues long into 2022.
