Ben White returns to England squad as Eberechi Eze and Jarell Quansah withdraw

Ben White’s England exile is over with a late call-up to replace Jarell Quansah in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

White’s Arsenal team-mate Eberechi Eze has also withdrawn and has been replaced by Harvey Barnes.

The defender last played for England almost exactly four years ago, a 3-0 win over Ivory Coast in March 2022.

White was selected for Gareth Southgate’s World Cup 2022 squad but left during the tournament and soon made himself unavailable for England selection for the remainder of Southgate’s tenure.

Speaking last year, Tuchel confirmed that White was again interested in representing his country and will have the opportunity this week to earn his fifth cap.

Newcastle’s Barnes will be looking to earn just his second cap, having made his debut six years ago during a friendly win over Wales.

The pair replace Eze, who has been sidelined with a calf injury, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Quansah, who has been struggling with a thigh complaint.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel has made it clear, as he prepares to name his World Cup squad in May, that he values positional versatility, and, like Quansah, White is adept at both right-back and centre-back.

Barnes, meanwhile, has scored 14 goals in all competitions for Newcastle this season while playing across both right and left flanks.

Scotland, who will also be at the World Cup, made a significant effort to tempt Barnes into switching his international allegiance.

But head coach Steve Clarke confirmed last month that the winger had made a final decision to concentrate on getting back into the England team.
