Ben White on Marcelo Bielsa's one-word pre-match message to Leeds United players

Ben White has lifted the lid on life under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United.

White enjoyed a highly successful loan spell at Leeds last season, helping Bielsa's team win promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds were keen to sign the central defender permanently but he ended up returning to parent club Brighton & Hove Albion.

White nonetheless remains grateful to Leeds and Bielsa for helping him develop as a player.

The 23-year-old has spoken about the "detailed" post-match debriefs at Leeds in an interview with The Athletic.

Bielsa discusses the transfer rumours about Alioski

“I would never think of the stuff he talks about and how important the little things are," he said. "Little things like the speed of the pass, the speed of your movement to get the ball.

“It’s why he is so good, The attention to detail in every aspect of the game is such a high level. He expects high standards from everyone.

"We were doing drills every day on passing. They are not all going to be the best, but if you keep doing something over and over again, you’re going to get more success on a game day.

“I progressed massively under him. He gave me the opportunity to perform on a big stage and he helped me massively to do so.

“He’s very passionate, wants the best every day. He wants you to train like it’s a game, like it’s the final of the World Cup. Every day, the standards are so high.”

While Bielsa is well known for his attention to detail, it seems the Argentine keeps his message a bit more simple just before kick-off.

Asked what his final instructions were in the dressing room ahead of a game White replied: "Run," before adding: "To pressure the ball, get back in position if you lose the ball, a counter-press. Just whenever you do lose the ball, you need to get behind it and win the ball back. That was the most important thing we did last year.

“As soon as you lose the ball, if you ‘go’ straight away, you’ve got the best chance of winning it back. The other team are not going to be in the right shape to play.”
