Ben Watson finally replaced and Cafu's deal - Nottingham Forest big midfield debate

Nottingham Forest took a welcome step in the right direction with their 2-1 win against Coventry City on Tuesday night.

Victory took the Reds up to 19th in the Championship table and made it three wins in their last five league games.

The match, along with the January transfer window, was discussed on this week's Garibaldi Red podcast, with special focus on Forest's new look midfield.

Reds fan and journalist Daniel Storey joined Sarah Clapson and Matt Davies to discuss James Garner's promising debut and whether Garner and Filip Krovinovic will make Forest more entertaining.

Cafu's permanent signing was also discussed. He has signed on a two-and-a-half year contract after leaving Olympiacos.

Part of the transcript is below, but you can listen to the full episode here, or watch it here.

GARIBALDI RED: What kind of side do you want Nottingham Forest to be?

What impact can James Garner and Filip Krovinvoic make?

Daniel Storey : "Sammy Ameobi and Joe Lolley have come in for flak for their performances, but the reality is that if you move the ball slowly to them then the opposition has time to get back and put two players on whoever receives it.

"We need to play the ball quicker. I understand why Hughton is risk averse.

"He reasons that if we keep clean sheets then we'll move up the table. There has to be a balance.

"Not last night, but in other games it's been pretty turgid stuff and it looks like Forest only react when they go behind.

"They went behind again, but there was a different kind of intent last night."

Will they make Forest more entertaining?

Sarah Clapson : "They're two important signings in that sense. Garner can certainly pick a pass. Forest haven't replaced Ben Watson.

"They've got a lot of similar midfielders but none have done what Watson did. Garner is a different kind of player but he could be the closest to doing what Watson did.

"Krovinovic adds some drive. Forest haven't had that.

"For a long while it wouldn't matter who Forest had upfront. There was no service.

"They could have had Messi and they probably wouldn't have scored a goal. Chris Hughton still needs to get more out of them but they look more confident."

Is it a good move to sign Cafu on a two-and-a-half-year deal?

DS : "He falls into that mould of Forest players who seems to arrive and you're never quite confident they're wanted or want to be there.

"We give two-and-a-half or three year contracts to players and then we use the ownership model to move them on or they fall into the Zach Clough mould where, even as committed fans, you forget they're there.

"You look at the team last night and wonder how he'll start games barring an injury crisis, unless he really shows Chris Hughton something."

SC : "He's done okay. He's not been amazing. He's not been the pick of the signings.

"I'm not sure I'd have given him a long-term deal. Chris Hughton seems to struggle with what his best position is.

"I thought he looked better further forwards, but Cafu says he's better deeper. The fact he can play different roles is good."

What is Forest's best midfield when everyone is available?

SC : "Krovinovic is in there and Knockaert has played his way in.

"I think Mighten deserves more game time but Chris Hughton seems to like Sammy Ameobi.

"The midfield two behind them, James Garner would definitely be one and Ryan Yates the other."

DS : "For individual talent it should be Knockaert and Lolley on the wings and Garner and Yates in the middle.

"It should pick itself but when you lose games as regularly as we do and fixtures come so fast, it doesn't really feel like Chris Hughton has a first choice XI yet.

"Hopefully that changes now and Garner plays 15 times or more. It's so hard to do anything in the first 30 minutes or so of games when the team changes so much."
